Apologies for the erratic posts, I’ve been unwell. Not covid, just old age. I would say things will be more regular now but we’re going to get hit by an ice storm this weekend. Oh well, I’ll do what I can, love you anyway, woo!
NEW RESOURCES
Asahi Shimbun: JAXA opens online database of soil, rocks taken from asteroid. “The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) is offering the public a chance to see the soil and rock samples brought back to Earth from the asteroid Ryugu by its Hayabusa 2 space probe. JAXA on Jan. 13 launched a website to showcase the collected specimens.”
TWEAKS AND UPDATES
Gizmodo: After Years of Dragging Its Arse, Google Will Finally Add Left-Handed Support to Wear OS. “Google had all but abandoned its smartwatch platform until Samsung stepped in last year to help build Wear OS 3. Now the company finally seems open to tackling the problems its user have been complaining about for years, starting with support for left-handed users.”
CNN: ‘Baby Shark’ becomes the first YouTube video to hit 10 billion views. “‘Baby Shark,’ the inescapable earworm beloved by some children and often feared by their parents, has hit a new milestone — 10 billion views on YouTube. Not only is it the most-viewed video on the platform, a record it set in November 2020, but it’s now the only video on the site to reach 10 billion views, YouTube confirmed to CNN.”
USEFUL STUFF
MakeUseOf: How to Use Google Forms to Create an Interactive Workflow. “Google Forms isn’t just another simple survey tool. In its simplest form, it can be used as a free data collection tool. AROUND THE SEARCH AND SOCIAL MEDIA WORLD
Exclaim: No, Google — Fred Durst’s Dad Is Not Convicted Killer Robert Durst. “There was a collective shudder earlier this week when the name ‘Durst’ was trending on Twitter, but thankfully Fred Durst is seemingly alive and well; however Robert Durst — the 78-year-old real estate heir and convicted murderer with whom the Limp Bizkit frontman shares a surname — died on Monday (January 10), and now Google seems to think he’s the musician’s father.”
The Guardian: Newcastle museum to return Benin bronze stave. “A Benin bronze in the collection of a Newcastle museum is to be proactively returned to Nigeria, the latest in a number of repatriations that ratchet up pressure on the British Museum to follow suit. Pollstar: The Awesome Power Of TikTok For Touring: New Social Media Giant Paves The Way To The Road . “A new report by Cloudflare, a web infrastructure and content delivery network, just put TikTok as the Internet’s number one visited site, ahead of Google and Facebook. With its video snippet format, the social media platform, helps make, break, build, buoy and/or bury careers as artists become meme sensations climbing streaming charts on the wings of user generated content. And if they’re really successful, the hub’s hubbub can even convert users to hard ticket buyers. Just look at Grammy-winning artists who found early success on the platform like Megan Thee Stallion, Doja Cat and original TikTok breakout star Lil Nas X, all of whom today sell out arenas, headline festivals and more.” Are we just going to ignore the fact that Doja Cat did “Mooo!” on YouTube in 2018 and that video has over 100 million views?

MediaPost: Newly Unredacted Filings Allege Google Ran Manipulated Ad Auctions. “A report Friday in the Wall Street Journal said the unredacted information, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, alleges Google created secret programs for manipulating the pricing and processes of its ad auctions, deflating sales for some companies while increasing prices for buyers. Google would then pocket the difference between what it told buyers and sellers an ad cost, and use the pool of money to manipulate future auctions and expand its digital monopoly, the newly unredacted complaint alleges, per the WSJ.”
