NEW RESOURCES

Times of Israel: Groundbreaking AI project translates 5,000-year-old cuneiform at push of a button. “‘Google Translate’-like program for Akkadian cuneiform will enable tens of thousands of digitized but unread tablets to be translated to English. Accuracy is debatable.”

PetaPixel: ‘AI or Not’ is a Free Web App That Claims to Detect AI Generated Photos. “‘AI or Not’ is a free web-based app that claims to be able to identify images generated by artificial intelligence (AI) simply by uploading them or providing a URL.” I tried it with three things — an AI-generated image, a photo, and a meme — and it got 3 out of 3 correct.

TWEAKS AND UPDATES

NBC News: Reddit CEO praises Elon Musk’s cost-cutting as protests rock the platform. “In an interview Thursday with NBC News, Reddit CEO Steve Huffman praised Musk’s aggressive cost-cutting and layoffs at Twitter, and said he had chatted ‘a handful of times’ with Musk on the subject of running an internet platform.”

AROUND THE INTERNET WORLD

SF Gate: Google gets go-ahead to build 153-acre Bay Area neighborhood by headquarters. “Bay Area tech giant Google got the go-ahead to build a 153-acre mixed-use neighborhood just south of its headquarters in north Mountain View on June 13, with unanimous city council approval. Plans for the 30-year project, which will supplant the Google offices and parking lots currently in the area, include over 3 million square feet of office space and 7,000 residential units.”

Sydney Morning Herald: Ex-Google boss buys $98m superyacht abandoned by Russian oligarch. “The billionaire ‘won the auction this morning in a fully transparent process’, buying the vessel for $US67.6 million ($98.4 million), according to Sir Ronald Sanders, Antigua’s ambassador to the US.”

SECURITY & LEGAL

WIRED: A Russia-Based Hacking Rampage Hits US Agencies and Exposes Millions. “UNITED STATES CYBERSECURITY officials said yesterday that a ‘small number’ of government agencies have suffered data breaches as part of a broad hacking campaign that is likely being carried out by the Russia-based ransomware gang Clop.”

Techdirt: Twitter’s Lawyers Admit They’re Overwhelmed As Nearly 2000 Laid Off Employees File Arbitration Claims. “Twitter’s lawyers note that there are four law firms handling the majority of the cases, with the largest (by far) being Lichten & Liss-Riordan (Shannon Liss-Riordan made herself known to Twitter employees basically as soon as Musk took over, so it’s not surprising that the majority of ex-employees went to her firm). Apparently 1,848 of the 1,986 arbitration cases have all come from this firm.”

Japan Times: Japan to open up Apple and Google app stores to competition. “A government panel Friday drew up a set of regulations aimed at opening up the smartphone app stores of U.S. technology giants Apple and Google to competition. The two companies dominating the smartphone operating system market will be obliged to allow their users to download apps by using services other than their own app stores.”

RESEARCH & OPINION

MIT News: Defining the public interest in new technologies. “New online journal seeks to bring together the MIT community to discuss the social responsibilities of individuals who design, implement, and evaluate technologies.”

OTHER THINGS I THINK ARE COOL

Ars Technica: Ultra low-cost smartphone attachment measures blood pressure at home. “Given that 47 percent of adults in the US alone have hypertension, keeping on top of your blood pressure readings is a smart thing to do. And doing so could become much more convenient, requiring nothing more than your phone and an $0.80 piece of plastic, thanks to new research from the University of California, San Diego.” Good afternoon, Internet…
